IMG_2565The Spectrum Center Writer’s Guild is directed by writing teacher Max Regan and Rosa Glenn-Reilly, founder of Spectrum Center in Houston, Texas. The Guild has been offering writing classes and workshops to the Houston community for over twenty years. We offer classes, workshops, seminars and private coaching sessions to writers working in any genre, at any level of expertise.

Creative Writing Classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays in Houston TX at Spectrum Center. Max is in town teaching in the months of January, March, April, July, September and November, and we invite skilled writing teachers from the local Houston community to offer classes in Feb, May, June, August and October. Individual classes cover a variety of writing subjects and genres, from poetry to fiction to memoir. Ours is a good-natured, supportive writing community . Tuition varies by class. Classes usually include anywhere from 6 to 14 writers, ranging in age from 20 to 70. We meet to discuss various aspects on the writing craft and to support one another in bringing our texts and projects through to completion. Recent classes include: Writers and The Web, Getting Serious: The Art of Pushing Your Practice Forward, The Poet’s Eye, Secrets and Lies, Shaping The Plot, etc. Each Saturday and Sunday class stands alone, so you can attend one or both.

In January of each year we will offer a 3.5 day January Texas Writing Projects Intensive at Spectrum Center. As the new year begins it’s a great time to take a deep breath and pull that on-going writing project or idea back onto your desk and dig in so you can bring it to life! Whatever your project, book or idea is, this 3.5 day writing intensive is a chance to step out of your everyday lives, work and schedules, and dedicate some time to getting your writing project off the ground. Your project might be a novel, a story, a memoir, a how-to or children’s book. It might be a collection of poems, a fantasy novel or a family history. You might have piles of drafts and notes or just a small idea in the back of your head and heart that wont go away. Regardless of what stage of the writing process you are in, this immersive 3.5 days of working every day will help you bring your project to life.

The goal for this Intensive is simply to focus on your writing project, without distractions or procrastination. Writers will be divided into 2 small working groups, with 6 to 9 writers each. We get started with an evening session on Friday night, then each small group will meet for 2.5 hrs once a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to talk and strategize about the work that needs to be done. Together we will discuss your project and come up with a work-plan customized for each student, outlining your goals and discussing the aspects of the writer’s craft that will help you accomplish your work.

Each writer will have a lot of solo work time during every day. Max will also schedule a 1hr one-on-one private session with each writer over the course of the Intensive to discuss your specific project, text and goals. By the end of the Intensive each project should be more structured and well underway. For most writers it can be difficult to find a quiet, intentional space to sit down with their work each day. In order to provide writers with the most focused Intensive possible, we will make some writing spaces and offices available at Spectrum Center for those who need a quiet space to work. This retreat is open to any interested writer, regardless of experience, genre or stage of development. We welcome all your messy files, old journals, disorganized pages and wild ideas, no matter how tiny or gigantic!

For those writers who might also be interested in the Annual June Writing Projects 10-Day Retreat in Boulder, Colorado this four-day TX Intensive is a great way to get organized and get your text and your goals underway! While the profile of both the Intensive and the Retreat are similar, there will different curriculum, exercises and techniques used in each event.

To register for the January Texas Projects Intensive please contact Rosa Glenn Reilly at Tuition for the Intensive is $450 and there is a $150 non-refundable deposit due at registration. We have a limited number of seats in the class so please let us know if you think the Intensive would work for you.

Private Coaching and Editing  sessions with Max are available for Houston-based writers who have specific projects or questions and would like to meet with Max while he is town for teaching weekends. These sessions are scheduled on the Monday following Writing Weekends. Max meets with clients at his office in Spectrum Center. Writing clients might use this time to talk about poetry, fiction, prose, writing projects, publishing or methods of organizing their writing space at home. In-depth feedback on their specific book, poem, manuscript, project, performance, story, novel or idea is always available, as well as coaching from first draft to final manuscript.

An initial consultation often begins with in-depth conversation about where you are in your writing life, where you want to go and how to move forward with energy and focus. Often initial meetings occur in person and are followed by a series of phone sessions to provide the writer with on-going support. The rate for Private Coaching is $90 per hour. To check availability or to set up a time, please send an e-mail to Max.
